Sitting at the foot of the Penken and Ahorn mountains with 57 lifts, 136km of skiing and Austria’s steepest run, Harakiri, Mayrhofen is one of the most diverse Alpine resorts. All slopes are reached by gondola, so beginners will need a full lift pass from day one, although the ski schools are great and the range of easier runs make for fast progression. Mayrhofen has a wide variety of more challenging runs and, in the right conditions, some impressive off-piste. If you manage to defeat the 38 degree gradient of Harakiri, you get to wear the "I survived Harakiri" t-shirt, and get your 5 minutes' of fame at a free photo shoot every Friday. The Penken Park is also one of the leading freestyle parks in Europe, made up of eight areas. But don't worry, even if you're a beginner you can practice your skills in the Kids Park section...

Hotel Obermair

Starting out life as a simple guesthouse, the Garni Hotel Obermair has transformed into a popular, no frills hotel.

Over the years, they've added an annexe, an indoor pool and a nice little wellness area. But through all the changes, the Obermair hasn't lost it's its traditional charm and typical Austrian wooden panelling throughout.

The heated indoor pool is a decent size - big enough for a few early morning laps, or a splash abou tafter getting back from the slopes. The pool is located in the main building, along with the wellness area with Finnish sauna, herbal sauna, steam bath and rain showers.

Bed and breakfast is the standard at the Obermair - and the breakfast by all accounts is very tasty. You'll get a range of hot and cold dishes from the buffet. The Obermair doesn't have its own restaurant, but for simplicity you can upgrade to half board, with evening meals eaten at the nearby Hotel Neuhaus, Hotel Berghof or Hotel Rose – all less than 10 minutes' walk away. You'll be told which hotel you'll be eating at for the week once you arrive in resort. Or stick with bed and breakfast and discover some of Mayrhofen's best restaurants.

Location wise, you're just on the edge of town. The nearest bars and restaurants are just a couple of minutes away and the Penken gondola is only 12 minutes' walk away. If you plan on getting out and about a little further into the Ziller Valley, the bus and train stations are both close by and the ski bus stops right outside.
