Bavarian Alps and Lakes Walk:  Walking Level  

Having made arrangements with our supplier in Germany, Olivia and I enjoyed a quick 3 night break in Germany to sample some of the fantastic walks on offer in the Bavaria region.  At this level you can expect moderate walks on well-maintained walking paths without the need for any technical requirements. Daily walks of up to 5 hours (sometimes a little bit longer depending on your pace) with slight alterations in altitude. To be able to fully enjoy these tours good health and a good basic fitness level are required.

 

Our journey began with an early morning flight from Dublin to Munich with Aer Lingus which took approx 2 hours 20 minutes.  On arrival in Munich Airport we made our way downstairs to the train station where we boarded our train which took us to our first port of call the town of Schilersee.  Our train journey required a change of trains en-route which was very straightforward.  The rail system in Germany is top class and very comfortable.  The journey took approx 2 hours in total.

Schilersee

On arrival in Schilersee we disembarked the train and walked to The Hotel Reiter.  It is located approx 20 minutes walk from the train station.  We dropped our bags and made our way back to the village where we were welcomed in a local cafe/bar and enjoyed some local cuisine and German Weisbeer!  With our appetite fulfilled we took a stroll towards Lake Schilersee.  A big tourist attraction and a perfect place to un-wind with a local beer or glass of wine after a long day walking while enjoying the scenery.  You can hire boats and pedalloes which cost €18 for 30 minutes.  We called it a night after dining in Zum Hofhaus am See.  

 

First day walking: Lake Schilersee to Bayrischzell 

Walking time: Approx. 5 hours.

Details: Approx. 15 kms, +180 m / -990 m

After breakfast we left our luggage in reception to be collected later and brought to our next Hotel in the town of Bayrnischzell.  We then walked from our Hotel to the bus station where we took the bus to the cable car station, Mount Taubenstein.  A light and airy cable car ride took 15 minutes to get us to the top.  We met loads of people at the top of all ages from young and old to families enjoying the scenery before their descent.  Our path was a high altitude path with brilliant views of the Rotwandhaus.  The start of the path was quite steep in places and slippery in parts but we took our time while concentrating on not falling!  After stopping off for lunch in Rotwandhaus we then began our descent which took approx 2 hours, walking along mountain paths with stunning views of the surrounding fields and forests.  We arrived in the town of Spritzingsee and from there we took the local bus to Neuhaus which took roughly 15 minutes.  Upon arrival in Neuhaus bus/train station we boarded the local train to our final destination of the day – Bayrischzell.  The train journey took approx 20 minutes. 

We checked into the Hotel Alpenrose.  A quick shower and change of attire and we dined in one of the local restaurants before calling it a night.  We welcomed our comfy bed with open arms!

Second day walking:  Round trip onto Mount Wendelstein 

Walking time: Approx. 4 to 5 hours.

Details: Approx. 6 kms, +910 m / -20 m

After our breakfast we walked from our Hotel to the start of our climb up Mount Wendelstein – 1724 metres high.  We followed the King Maximillian path which lead us past a waterfall to the Weldenstein-Alp.  From here we walked along high altitude paths with amazing views.  We found it extremely steep with uneven surfaces in places.  We walked through forests and farming pastures before arriving at the summit 3 hours later.  We had lunch at the summit before taking the cable car down the mountain which took approx 7 minutes!  At the bottom we walked to the train station which was 10 minutes walk from the cable car station and took the train back to Bayrischzell which took approx 5 minutes and cost €1.50 per person.

  

Homeward bound to Ireland

We had an early start leaving Bayrischzell.  Our train journey took approx 1.5 hours which took us to Munich Airport.  We flew home with Aer Lingus feeling tired but extremely proud of our expeditions!
